The Story
How a fitness coordinator became Ireland's leading voice in mature adult Latin dance
Síle discovered her passion for Latin dance while working as a fitness coordinator in Dublin's city centre. She noticed something important — there was a massive gap in dance programming for adults over 45. Most classes assumed you'd been dancing since childhood. That's not realistic.
After completing her advanced salsa and bachata certifications with the International Dance Teachers Association in 2013, she decided to do something about it. She launched her first community dance initiative on Dublin's Southside with just 12 people. Within three years, it'd grown to over 200 regular attendees. Not through hype. Through consistency and actually listening to what people needed.
Her work expanded across Ireland. She established beginner-friendly salsa classes in Cork's Northside and coordinated weekly social dance meetups in Limerick's community centres. Each project followed the same principle — remove barriers to participation. That meant modified choreography, welcoming atmospheres, flexible scheduling, and instructors who didn't make you feel behind.
"Latin dance is for everyone, regardless of age or prior experience. You don't need to be fit. You don't need to have rhythm. You just need to show up."
— Síle O'Connor
Today, Síle's work combines her practical experience as a bachata instructor with her education in Sports & Recreation Management from University College Dublin. Her articles and guides reflect real-world insights gained from running dance events, training instructors, and listening to what mature dancers actually need to feel confident and included. She doesn't write about theory. She writes about what works.

Philosophy and methodology behind everything Síle writes
Practical Over Perfect
Síle doesn't believe in theory that doesn't work in real life. Everything she writes comes from running actual dance events, training instructors, and talking to people who've felt intimidated by dance. She's been in the room when someone dances for the first time in 30 years. She knows what helps.
Inclusive by Default
There's no such thing as "too old" or "not coordinated enough" in Síle's world. Her guides and articles assume zero prior experience and zero judgment. She writes for the person who's nervous about their first class. For the person who thinks they can't dance. For anyone who's been told dance isn't for them.
Community Focused
Dance isn't just about steps. It's about connection. Finding your people. Building confidence in a welcoming space. Síle's articles highlight real venues, real instructors, and real communities across Ireland because she knows that showing up to the right place with the right people makes all the difference.
"You don't need permission to dance. You don't need to be young. You don't need to be fit. You just need to decide that you're worth the effort, and then show up."
— Síle O'Connor
